TOMS RIVER, NJ — A section of Old Freehold Road that had to be opened last week to repair a broken water main will be closed overnight this week for road repairs, officials announced.

SUEZ water and its contractor will be milling and paving Old Freehold Road at Mulberry Place, weather permitting, overnight on Tuesday and Wednesday nights, the company said.

TOMS RIVER — To Debbie Gallo, an English and special education at High School East, the importance of having children read books with diverse characters became clear when she saw the difference it made to her students.

“Many of my children struggle with reading comprehension skills,” Gallo told the Toms River Regional Board of Education at the board’s December meeting, urging them to approve the state’s new health and physical education curriculum. “As new books with diverse characters came into the curriculum, I got to see a spark, a light in those children’s eyes, that I rarely saw before.”

TOMS RIVER — Downtown redevelopment took a huge step forward late Wednesday night, when the planning board unanimously approved plans to build two, 10-story apartment towers at the former Red Carpet Inn site.

The board’s action gave another big boost to Capodagli Property Co.’s plans to construct 285 apartment units, a two-level riverfront boardwalk, along with a restaurant, coffee shop, and a “doggie day care” in 16,000-square-feet of retail space.

TOMS RIVER – A threat on social media was reported to school officials but it was learned that it was in a different town.

The district became aware of the social media post at around 9:45 a.m. on December 14, High School South Principal Michael Citta said in a note to parents. Within ten minutes, the police School Resource Officer confirmed that it was actually for New Brunswick High School.

Keansburg woman in critical condition after crashing into Toms River garbage truck

TOMS RIVER – A Keansburg woman is in critical condition after her motor vehicle collided with a garbage truck at Garfield and Windsor avenues in the East Dover section on Tuesday morning, according to police.

Anna Zybura, 37, was going north on Garfield Avenue when police said she failed to observe a stop sign at the intersection and was struck by the sanitation truck going west on Windsor Avenue, said Jillian Messina, a spokeswoman for the Toms River Police Department.

$6,800 Charged To Toms River Man’s Credit Cards After Burglary

JACKSON, NJ — Authorities are seeking the identity of a man in connection with burglaries of a pair of vehicles at Pine Barrens Golf Club that resulted in more than $6,800 in charges on a Toms River man’s credit cards.

The burglaries happened Dec. 3 in the parking area of the golf club on South Hope Chapel Road, Jackson Police Capt. Steve Laskiewicz said.
