Under Gov. Phil Murphy’s order, students and teachers must wear a mask in school, but they’ll find out this week whether that can happen.

Toms River among several NJ school districts putting mask mandate on hold due to extreme heat

Toms River, along with the Lacey School District as well as the West Milford School District, are citing the potential for excessive heat as a basis for keeping masks optional to start the year, in spite of Gov. Phil Murphy’s order that all students need to wear masks.
Excessive eat is an exemption in the executive order.  The district says on its website it’ll be optional on buses and in buildings because of the potential for extreme heat.
There’s some pushback in West Milford. Some parents started a petition requesting the mandate be adhered to in spite of any heat.

Middletown Students And Parents Flood BOE Meeting, Fighting Masks

MIDDLETOWN, NJ — Students and parents flooded the Wednesday night Middletown BOE meeting, protesting Gov. Phil Murphy’s mask mandate.

That would be Executive Order 251, issued by Murphy Aug. 6, which mandates all K-12 public and private students in New Jersey wear masks when the school year begins in just a few weeks.

This comes the same night that, down in Toms River, Republican governor candidate Jack Ciattarelli urged the Toms River BOE not to follow the executive order and to make masks optional.

Parents Weigh Sending Children Back To School With Masks

OCEAN COUNTY – For many students across the country, this fall will be their first time back in the classroom on a regular schedule in almost a year and a half. New Jersey students are no exception. Based on the state’s guidance, students should expect to be back in school full time, with no remote option as of yet.

Gov. Phil Murphy declared that all students, educators, staff and visitors are required to wear masks in public, private and parochial schools, regardless of grade level, unless they meet an exemption.

Some parents called for a virtual learning option for students. Perhaps their child was a more successful or confident online learner, or they worried about the Delta variant of COVID-19. Others expressed concerns about masking students.
