First look at plans for downtown Toms River banquet hall, restaurants

TOMS RIVER — Township officials have released renderings of plans for a downtown banquet hall, restaurants and a parking deck with a rooftop garden.

The project, to be called “River Chateau,” has been proposed by Capodagli Property Co., which has been designated as the “conditional redeveloper” for a parcel that includes a parking lot off Robbins Parkway as well as two dilapidated buildings and a small, fenced parking lot where a former boatworks once stood.

Good samaritan rescues family dog after Middletown, NJ residence catches on fire

It took 30 firefighters to put out a blaze that started at a residence on West Front Street in the River Plaza section of Middletown Township on Tuesday afternoon, but everyone came away uninjured.

The details of the house fire were announced by the Middletown Township Fire Department.

Someone called 9-1-1 on Tuesday afternoon around 2:37 pm reporting that they saw flames showing as they passed by a house at 460 West Front Street and that call was relayed over to the Middletown Township Fire Department.

New Jersey beaches suddenly becoming tent cities (Opinion)

It used to be that if somebody had a small baby or small children that they wanted to take to the beach they would bring a modest tent-like structure. The little ones could take a nap and their delicate skin could be protected from the sun. That’s a very good idea.

Now it’s everybody and his brother and sister and brother-in-law and cousin and roommate from college living under a tent for the day at Jersey beaches. We usually don’t spend more than an hour or two on the beach and it really doesn’t bother us, but some people complain about the lack of adequate space and/or blocking the view of the ocean with all these people with tents.

The VMAs were pretty amazing last night! The Prudential Center was literally crawling with celebrities.  Everywhere you looked there was a limo, a red carpet moment, and you just felt the ‘big energy’ in the air.  I’m super nosey so I was watching all the behind the scenes stuff and it is pretty cool what you can learn being a fly on the wall.

New Jersey’s 10-day sales tax holiday is now in effect

If you’re catching up on “back-to-school” shopping in New Jersey this week, you’ll be able to save some money.

That’s because the state’s sales tax holiday is in effect until Labor Day.

As a result, school supplies like backpacks, notebooks, index cards, and pencils are tax-free. Computers that cost less than $3,000 are also exempt during the tax holiday. So are other school-related purchases like sports equipment and art supplies.

It’s a new era at Toms River South where Matt Martin takes over as head coach after spending the last 11 seasons as an assistant to his uncle, Ron Signorino Jr.

Martin, who is also the grandson of legendary Indians coach Ron Signorino Sr., will very much run his own program and South fans can expect to see many changes this fall. Gone will be the flexbone offense which had been a staple and replaced by a spread attack which will make the quarterback a bigger part of things.
