N.J. weather: Top 27 rain totals from Tropical Storm Ophelia

in Toms River News

After four straight days of rain from moisture associated with Tropical Storm Ophelia, New Jersey is finally getting close to escaping the cloudy, dreary weather. And the sun may actually make a rare appearance on Wednesday.

Here’s a look at the 27 towns across the Garden State that reported the most rain from late Friday through Tuesday morning, according to data from the National Weather Service, the Rutgers NJ Weather Network and the Community Collaborative Rain, Hail & Snow Network, known as CoCoRaHS.

A quick reminder: Most regions of New Jersey normally get between 3.5 and 4 inches of rain during the entire month of September. So the places listed below were drenched with more than a month’s worth of rain in just a few days.

N.J. weather: Record-warm temperatures making it feel more like spring than winter

in Toms River News

New Jersey got a little taste of spring fever Wednesday afternoon, even though the calendar claims it’s still early winter.

Thanks to warm air flowing in from the southwest, temperatures have soared into the 60s in many areas of the state, and the mercury reached a balmy 70 degrees near Atlantic City, according to preliminary data from the National Weather Service.

If that reading holds up at the end of the day, it will be the warmest Jan. 4 on record at Atlantic City International Airport in the Pomona section of Galloway Township. The current record is 68 degrees, set in 1950.

in Toms River News

The Bottom Line

The first weekend of October was ugly, as the remnants of Ian blew in rain and wind.

The second (extended) weekend of October was beautiful, with plenty of sunshine and awesome autumnal temperatures.

Wednesday NJ weather: Warming up, then cooling down

in Toms River News

The Bottom Line

Happy first day of December! On average, this is New Jersey’s 3rd coldest month of the year. (Behind only January and February.) It is our 4th wettest and 3rd snowiest month too. Only 20 days to go until the official start of Winter.

As we begin the new month, there is still no “dramatic” weather in New Jersey’s forecast, for the next week at least. There will be some temperature swings — from cool to warm, and back again. And there will be some showers — mainly rain, nothing heavy. Our next chance of something bigger will be in the middle of next week.

Monday NJ weather: The second of three chilly November days

in Toms River News

The Bottom Line

Sunday’s high temperatures only reached the mid to upper 40s across New Jersey, easily our coldest day of the season so far. Monday’s forecast highs: also in the mid to upper 40s. With a brisk wind adding to the chill in the air.

Tuesday will be unseasonably cold too, before temperatures moderate midweek. The warmup will be welcome, but brief. Our next storm system late-week will drive a round of rain through New Jersey. Followed by another bout of tumbling temperatures, of course.

At least there are no substantial periods of severe weather or winter weather in the forecast for the next week (at least).
