in Toms River News
Toms River, along with the Lacey School District as well as the West Milford School District, are citing the potential for excessive heat as a basis for keeping masks optional to start the year, in spite of Gov. Phil Murphy’s order that all students need to wear masks.
Excessive eat is an exemption in the executive order.  The district says on its website it’ll be optional on buses and in buildings because of the potential for extreme heat.
There’s some pushback in West Milford. Some parents started a petition requesting the mandate be adhered to in spite of any heat.

The first allowable exception to New Jersey’s statewide mandate that masks be worn in schools, for excessive heat in classrooms, will be put to the test during the first week of classes.

Some districts, including Lacey Township, Toms River and West Milford, already announced masks will be optional, but strongly encouraged.

The three districts are just three of many across the state. The guidance does not define what “extreme heat indoors” means, by temperature, humidity, or any other index.

A new ‘frontier’ drives development of town that led N.J. in building permits issued last year

in Toms River News

It didn’t matter that it was raining in Stafford Township. There were houses to build.

Despite the alternating drizzle and downpour on a recent Friday morning, workers used earth movers to spread gravel on sandy soil, stood on ladders nailing plywood panels onto 2-by-4 frames, and wrapped the freshly built walls with green plastic waterproofing sheets.

Whole blocks of houses at a time are being constructed in the township’s Manahawkin section, just off Exit 63 of the Garden State Parkway. They’re going up in a community known as Stafford Park under a multi-phase redevelopment plan adopted in 2006 for 345 single family houses, plus 310 apartments, on a 350-acre area site surrounding the capped Stafford Township Landfill.

in Toms River News

When Tova Herskovitz of Toms River heard that Afghan evacuees were arriving at Joint Base McGuire-Dix-Lakehurst only a few miles from her house, she began to gather clothes, shoes and toys to donate.

Herskovitz, who is Jewish Orthodox, said she wanted to do something because some of her family members who survived the Holocaust were helped by others, and she wanted to pay it forward.

“It feels so close to home; I feel like it’s a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to help people who are in this dire situation, and they are so close,’’ she said. “To think about when I’m here swimming with my kids in the pool and buying them school supplies, and then you have kids a half hour away with nothing.”
