87 Percent of New Cases Affect Unvaccinated

in Toms River News

New data from the Ocean County Health Department shows the major impact vaccinations are having in reducing the spread of Covid-19, the coronavirus infection, with an overwhelming majority of newly-reported cases affecting the unvaccinated.

Last week, Shorebeat reported that two Ocean County municipalities – Lakewood and Lacey townships – had yet to reach a benchmark 70 percent vaccination rate. Those towns still lag, however Brick and Jackson, two of the three towns most affected by the pandemic since March 2020, have surpassed that level.

Ocean County Commissioner Gerry Little, liaison to the health department, said staff produced new numbers prior to a meeting held Tuesday. In all, among people who have been vaccinated, there have been 1,912 confirmed breakthrough cases, including 174 in the last week. But this pales in comparison with the number of infections reported over the last day alone among the unvaccinated. Over the past 24 hours, there were 185 newly-reported cases, and over the past week, it has been determined that 87 percent of these cases affected those who have not yet been vaccinated against Covid-19. Even among the 13 percent of new cases that were among those vaccinated, the vast majority were mild.

TWO MORE SUMMER-ISH DAYS, THEN TWO DAMP AND DREARY DAYS

in Toms River News

Only eight more days of summer left before we “fall” into autumn. And as we look at the rest of this week, we’re looking at two more warm, humid, relatively pleasant days for Tuesday and Wednesday. That will be followed by a 36-hour period of unsettled, damp, and dreary weather for Thursday and Friday. If everything goes according to plan, the final weekend of summer should bring a return to fair skies.

Our weather has since dried out, although there is some patchy fog being reported, especially where it poured.

Look for mixed sun and clouds throughout Tuesday, with manageable humidity levels. Thermometers are starting the day in the 60s for all but the immediate coast.

Where to find the best donut shop in every county in New Jersey

in Toms River News

For the past two months, I’ve dedicated my journalistic efforts to finding the best donut shops in New Jersey.

I drove to the farthest reaches of the states, put thousands of miles on my Nissan, parallel parked on dozens of busy shore-town streets, woke up at the crack of dawn to wait in line — and tasted donuts of all shapes, sizes and creeds at 79 donut shops, give or take.

Why? Because donuts are a near-perfect food. Be they dense and cakey, fluffy and bread-like, hot and airy, covered in sticky glaze or velvety powdered sugar — fried pockets of sugar dough are undeniably delicious.

New Jersey Law Could Change The Way That You Drive

in Toms River News

You can throw beeping in with taxes, traffic lights, construction, bad drivers and politicians as part of a group of things we have enough of at the Jersey Shore, right? We bet you heard illegal beeping at least once today at the Jersey Shore. As a matter of fact, we’re almost certain you broke New Jersey law multiple times the last time you were in your own vehicle. I may be time to tone down the honking.

It turns out there is was law on the books in New Jersey that requires you to honk each time you pass a vehicle on the left to alert the diver you are passing her or him. Yes, you had to beep each time you pass someone, or face a pretty hefty fine.

Toms River Town Hall Gets Upgrades

in Toms River News

TOMS RIVER – The downtown municipal building is undergoing a facelift that will update and repair some of the aging structure.

The front of the building, facing Washington Street, used to be a private home almost a century ago. The rest of town hall is made up of additions.

All of the decorative fascia boards, railings, and stairs will be replaced, township officials said. Much of the original wood is rotting and will be replaced by a composite material that needs zero maintenance. The original appearance will continue to look historic, while the content will stand the passage of time.

Two Ocean County Towns Still Below 70 Percent Vaccinated as Clinic Returns to T.R. North

in Toms River News

Ocean County health officials this week said two of the county’s 33 municipalities remain below the benchmark of 70 percent vaccinated for Covid-19.

Lakewood, the county’s largest community, and Lacey Township, with a population of about 29,000 in southern Ocean County, have the lowest vaccination rates of the county. Just 25 percent of Lakewood’s total population had been fully vaccinated and 30 percent had received a single shot, while in Lacey Township, 46 percent had received both doses and 51 percent had received a single dose.

In recent weeks, two of the county’s largest towns – Brick and Jackson – reached the overall 70 percent vaccination goal, said Ocean County Commissioner Gerry P. Little, who spent much of his day holding meetings with health officials from the county and state. The county has been reaching out to both the Lakewood and Lacey communities, and has found success partnering with the school district in Lacey to vaccinate more residents.
