It helps remind us that there are beings swimming around in the ocean while we’re eating funnel cakes and playing the claw machine on the boardwalk. It turns out we had a recent “ping” indicating a shark had surfaced not too far from Toms River.

Carlos Rojas sat in his wheelchair on a ramp overlooking the crisp white sand and rough blue waves of the Atlantic Ocean. His grandchildren squealed as they climbed on the playground overlooking Belmar beach.

Last summer, Rojas would have easily joined them, toting their sand toys, beach chairs and cooler. But the 79-year-old man, who splits his time between Florida and New Jersey, recently lost his leg after complications with COVID-19.

The owner of the game’s best sinker is fine and picked up two more saves in his last two outings after finally giving up a couple runs following a 2½-month scoreless streak.

Rookie Ron Marinaccio has been even more effective over the past five months. The Toms River, N.J., product retired the only three batters he faced in Saturday’s 13-4 win in Game 1 of a doubleheader. He has retired 46 of 47 batters over his last 15 outings — all scoreless.
