Mason Krey scored 12 points and Cole Toddings chipped in nine, but it was not enough as the Barnegat Bengals fell to Toms River East 42-36.

March Madness 2023: Ranking the N.J. boys basketball alums in the NCAA Tournament

March Madness is back and while New Jersey’s two flagship programs are on the outside looking in, there are still plenty of New Jersey-centric storylines to watch in the Tournament.

While it may be impossible to match last year when Cinderella resided on Kennedy Blvd. in Jersey City as Saint Peter’s made magical run to the Elite 8, that doesn’t mean there aren’t plenty of other Garden State storylines to follow. Locals Fairleigh Dickinson and Princeton hope that Cinderella decides to take just a short carriage ride as they look to defy the odds like the Peacocks did last March.

2022 WOBM Christmas Classic Seeds & Brackets Are Out!

Two weeks away from the start of the 38th Annual WOBM Christmas Classic the seeds and pairings for the basketball tournament have been announced.  Head coaches for the 32 participating teams met Sunday at The Office Lounge in Toms River and were in near unanimous agreement when it came to the top teams in the revised holiday tournament held at the RWJBarnabas Health Arena and presented by Jersey Mike’s.

On the boys side, Manasquan was the top seed in the eight-team Jim Ruhnke Bracket followed by St. John Vianney, Central and Brick Memorial.  The Steve Gepp Bracket has Jackson Memorial seeded first with Freehold Township, Toms River North, and Red Bank Catholic grabbing the other top spots.

In the girls division, it’s defending champion Red Bank Catholic seeded first in the Rey Cervino Bracket followed by Manasquan, Toms River North, and Donovan Catholic.  Ewing was the obvious top choice to lead the Kathy Snyder Bracket and the rest of the top four is made up of Rumson-Fair Haven, Wall, and Red Bank Regional.

Toms River East over Lacey – Girls basketball recap

Yana Shupak hit three 3-pointers and scored a game-high 22 points to spark Toms River East to a 53-45 win over Lacey in Lacey.

The game was tied at 37 after three quarters but Toms River East used a 16-8 run in the final period to pull away and improve to 11-7.

Toms River North over Central Regional – Boys basketball recap

Lamir Mitchell scored a team-high 15 points and Toms River North used a big fourth quarter to stay hot with a 47-38 win over Central Regional in Toms River.

The game was tied at 23 entering the fourth quarter before Toms River North outscored the visitors 24-15 in the period to extend its winning streak to six.

Steinert over Toms River South – Boys basketball recap

The win is the first of the season for Steinert (1-12), which saw Tyler Kostin turn in 13 points and Emmanuel Gatson notch 10.

Julia Grodzicki turned in 22 points, two rebounds, two assists and one steal for Toms River North in its 52-38 win against Central Regional in Toms River.

Georgia Pissott notched nine points, six rebounds, five blocks, three assists and three steals in a well-rounded effort for Toms River North (5-3).

Senior guard Jonathan Spatola scored a season high 22 points as No. 9 Marlboro defeated Manchester Township, 70-53, In the WOBM Christmas Classic semifinal at the RWJ Barnabas Arena in Toms River

Marlboro (5-0) will face No. 12 Red Bank Catholic in Thursday’s 7:30 championship in Toms River. Red Bank Catholic earned a 59-41 semifinal win over St. John Vianney.
