Neither rain nor 46-degree temperatures prevented the Toms River East Little League from celebrating its storied history with an Opening Day parade and festivities.

“The rain didn’t bother us,” league president Tommy Noone said prior to the event. “In the last 20 years, it has rained 18 times. We’re used to it. It would not be an opening without rain.”

Headlining the parade were the league’s championship 50/70 13U and 60/90 14U All-Star teams of last summer. Hundreds of members, led by Todd Frazier, who powered the Toms River East American Little League All-Star team to the 1998 Little League World Series title, marched. Hidden under umbrellas and attired in rain gear, hundreds of fans lined Windsor Avenue, the league’s location, enjoying their idols.

TOMS RIVER – The Toms River East Little League All-Stars wound up on the wrong side of a gem in the Little League Baseball Metro Region Tournament in Bristol, Ct.

East was no-hit in the championship game by right-hander Joey Lionetti, who pitched the New York-Massapequa Coast Little League to a 4-0 victory at the A. Bartlett Giamatti Little League Leadership Training Center on Friday night, August 12, broadcast on ESPN.

CLEVELAND — The Yankees lost their hottest reliever while taking two of three games during the Fourth of July weekend in Cleveland. No, not closer Clay Holmes. The owner of the game’s best sinker is fine and picked up two more saves in his last two outings after finally giving up a couple runs following a 2½-month scoreless streak.

Rookie Ron Marinaccio has been even more effective over the past five months. The Toms River, N.J., product retired the only three batters he faced in Saturday’s 13-4 win in Game 1 of a doubleheader. He has retired 46 of 47 batters over his last 15 outings — all scoreless.

TOMS RIVER – The Toms River Intermediate East baseball team enjoyed a season to remember.

The Rockets were 12-0 overall and won the Ocean County Intermediate Athletic League Red Division title at 8-0. They captured the Red Division championship last season at 7-1 en route to a 10-2 record.
