School Districts Get $37M in Stabilization Aid

in Toms River News

The New Jersey Department of Education has announced that 16 school districts will receive $37 million in stabilization aid.

In the fiscal year 2021-2022 state budget, some $50 million was included in stabilization aid grants to assist districts that are adjusting to new funding levels as determined by S-2, the school funding reform measure enacted in 2018.

Districts that experienced a reduction in state aid, or face a structural budgetary imbalance could apply for stabilization aid. The fiscal year Appropriations Act also provides for stabilization aid to military-impacted districts if certain criteria are met.

Three Ocean County school districts were awarded $20.2 million in combined stabilization aid – about 55% of the roughly $37 million that was announced.

Toms River, Jackson, and Brick Township school districts will receive about $7.6 million, $6.5 million and $6 million, respectively, after submitting applications to the New Jersey Department of Education.

New Jersey Ranks As Safest US State In Consumer Group’s Survey

in Toms River News

NEW JERSEY — In New Jersey, we’re used to hearing that we’re ranked No. 1 for less-than-positive attributes. But a new survey has ranked the Garden State as the safest in the nation.

The Consumer Affairs Research Team looked at data including recently released data from the FBI and the U.S. Census Bureau to score each state based on violent and property crime rates, the number of law enforcement officers per capita and law enforcement budgets, the organization said.

That data put New Jersey at the top of the list, largely on the strength of the number of law enforcement officers in the state, it said.

South Jersey Says It’s Still Too Soon To Start Decorating For Christmas

in Toms River News

Who knew South Jersey had such a strong opinion on this matter!

This lull between Halloween and Thanksgiving is often a heated topic for people regarding one aspect: Christmas decorating.

If you’re anything like me, then you like to let your fall decorations simmer and breathe for a little bit. You won’t catch me decorating for Christmas until it’s almost time to expand this waistline when we all stuff our faces with turkey in a few short weeks. Apparently, the majority of South Jersey agrees with me.

Possessing marijuana is legal in N.J. but these ‘gray’ market operators got busted

in Toms River News

Six months ago, Dan Kessel of Berkeley Township talked openly about Bud Hub, the cannabis gifting and delivery business he ran with his sister, almost daring law enforcement authorities to investigate and musing about “my goal to be legal.”

Today, Kessel sits in the Ocean County Correctional Facility where he’s been held without bail since Oct. 20. Berkeley Township Police arrested him on money laundering and marijuana distribution charges. They confiscated his jeep, with its Bud Hub signage, $400,000 in cash and an unknown quantity of marijuana from his Berkeley home and a property in Toms River.

LITTLE MISS LIBERTY STEALS THE SHOW- 1ST PRIZE WINNER!

in Toms River News

TOMS RIVER: Despite the rain and floods- the Annual Toms River Halloween Parade went off Saturday night as scheduled! The parade is a long-standing tradition here in Ocean County, and recently was only cancelled for Hurricane Sandy & Covid. This year it was time to get back into it- with a solid showing of attendees.

While the parade is a huge success and draw for the downtown area, the tradition of “moving” trick or treat is getting kind of annoying and confusing for locals- unless it falls on a Sunday.

Toms River Schools Receive $7.6M In Stabilization Aid From State

in Toms River News

TOMS RIVER, NJ — The Toms River Regional School District will receive $7.6 million in stabilization aid from the state Department of Education, officials formally announced Thursday.

The approval of the stabilization aid temporarily eases the financial distress created in the district under S2, the state law that has continuously cut state funding to the Toms River schools since it was signed into law in July 2018.

“Toms River Regional Schools is relieved and extremely grateful for Governor Murphy’s announcement today that our requested $7.6 million in stabilization aid will be provided,” Interim Superintendent Stephen Genco said.

“On behalf of our students and staff, I thank our board members and community supporters who spent time and effort behind the scenes to fight for our district and for Toms River; our team here who thoroughly and successfully developed our comprehensive application for stabilization aid; and of course Governor Murphy, who has heard our collective voice and who has responded. This is indeed wonderful and welcome news,” Genco said.

Tensions high as South Toms River Police hit salary impasse with Borough Administration

in Toms River News

Out of a contract since January 1, 2021, the South Toms River Police PBA is at a stalemate with STR Borough officials over how much those who work in the department are being paid and will be paid.

Now 10-months without a contract, the PBA said that they’ve been in negotiations with the borough for over a year and their goal remains the same as they seek fair and competitive wages for their members to prevent any more of an exodus.

South Toms River PBA 368 said in their statement that the reason 9 officers have left the department over the last few years and 3 more full-time officers are seeking employment with another police department right now is because of the “disparity of salary.”
