Here comes the Beast! Toms River finds fun way to beat post-COVID school absenteeism

in Toms River News

A portable speaker blared Survivor’s “Eye of the Tiger” as Toms River Intermediate North Assistant Principal Dave Fanslau wheeled a cart topped with a big black and silver trophy through C wing.

Principal Lynn Fronzak opened classroom doors so kids could get a glimpse of “The Beast,” the three-tiered, chain-decorated attendance trophy fashioned this summer by Assistant Principal Brian Blake, who wanted to create a hulking metal reminder of the importance of getting to school each day.

Topped with a menacing, muscle-bound silver figure, “The Beast” is awarded each month to the classroom with the best attendance. It’s part of a district-wide initiative aimed at increasing the number of kids who make it to class every day. On March 1, the trophy went to Sarah Dugan’s cycle 613 class of sixth-graders, the school’s first two-time attendance champions.

in Toms River News

Upon taking office in January, Mayor Rodrick said he was concerned about ongoing complaints and the high kill rate at Toms River’s Animal Shelter.  So the mayor made a surprise visit and was disturbed by what he saw.

“When I went to the door, it was locked.  An employee came to the door and curtly told me they were only open by appointment.  Once she recognized me as the mayor, her tone changed and I was invited in.”

According to the mayor, all the cages were full, and the animals were living in filth & excrement.  The administration also learned that animals had been in these cages for years. “It was disturbing and clear to me that we weren’t doing enough to get these animals into homes,” Rodrick said.

Always Check Medicine Labels for Active Ingredients

in Toms River News

Many people turn to over-the-counter (OTC or nonprescription) medicines to treat their cold, flu, COVID-19, or pain symptoms. OTC products can be bought without a prescription at local convenience stores, pharmacies, supermarkets, and online. However, having so many options available can often lead to confusion when it comes to choosing the right product for symptom relief.

“It’s essential to recognize that while over-the-counter medicines are widely available and commonly used, there can be a false sense of safety regarding the risk of dangerous adverse effects, including the potential for overdose,” said Bruce Ruck, managing director of the New Jersey Poison Control Center at Rutgers New Jersey Medical School. People of all ages are at risk of serious health effects from taking too much medicine, especially children and older adults.
