NJ plan for child care shortage starts with $28M for grants

TRENTON – One portion of a nine-bill package aimed at improving child care in New Jersey made it through the Legislature before its summer recess, providing $28 million for competitive grants for infant and toddler programs.

The Thriving By Three Act, as the grant program is called, passed nearly unanimously and was quickly signed into law in conjunction with the rest of the state’s 2023 budget. It’s not yet clear how quickly the applications for grant funding will be made available.

Toms River North Grad Awarded National Merit Scholarship

TOMS RIVER, NJ — A Toms River High School North graduate has received a National Merit Scholarship from the University of Southern California.

Jena Bhandari, a 2022 graduate, was among 1,200 additional winners of National Merit Scholarships financed by colleges and universities, officials with the National Merit Scholarship Program announced Monday.

ISLAND HEIGHTS – Toms River’s Erin Calicchio was an active 37-year-old wife, mom and high school teacher when she woke up on March 3, 2020.

By afternoon, that life was hold as she lay in an ICU hospital bed at Community Medical Center, a brain stem stroke, believed to be the result of an earlier bout with COVID-19, having left her right side paralyzed and her speech impaired.

Massive 11-foot, 800 pound shark spotted off the New Jersey coast

Every so often, it pays to check in with OCEARCH, the group that tags sharks and tracks them up and down the East Coast. It helps remind us that there are beings swimming around in the ocean while we’re eating funnel cakes and playing the claw machine on the boardwalk. It turns out we had a recent “ping” indicating a shark had surfaced not too far from Toms River.
