A Thanksgiving success story: Wild turkeys, once hunted to oblivion in Illinois, have spread across the Chicago area

in Toms River News

Last winter, residents of north suburban Winthrop Harbor joined online to follow the exploits of seven wild turkeys dubbed The Magnificent Seven. The birds strutted through neighborhood yards and roosted in nearby oak trees. Locals shared pictures on Facebook and marveled at the birds’ beauty.

This year, if the birds return, officials plan a “turkey tracker” on the village website, to let people know where to spot the animals.

Turkeys have been seen all around the Chicago area, watchers say, including at McCormick Place and in Beverly on the South Side, Evanston, South Holland, Bull Valley and along the Fox River.

I absolutely love walking through candy shops along the Seaside Heights boardwalk, as well as the Point Pleasant boardwalk.

Maybe you’re the same way, but I just ogle over the cases of fresh chocolate, salt water taffy, chocolate-covered pretzels, and of course anything that’s chocolate peanut butter!

Toms River North powers past Edison to make history and reach first Group 5 state championship game

in Toms River News

EVESHAM TOWNSHIP — Since stepping on the field in late August for a Week 0 game, Toms River North has been one of the most remarkable teams in all of New Jersey. The Mariners’ dominance has been so consistent that winning by 28 points seems like just another ordinary 48 minutes of football. Even in the state semifinals.

Junior quarterback Micah Ford was electric once again with 291 yards rushing and five touchdowns on 30 carries, plus a touchdown pass and a 2-point conversion as the Mariners rolled to a 42-14 victory over Edison in the NJSIAA Group 5 semifinals on Saturday night at Cherokee High School.

Ford had touchdown runs of 52, 2, 7, and 17 yards in the first half when Toms River North built a commanding 28-0 lead and then opened the third quarter scoring with a 15-yard touchdown pass to junior wide receiver Tareq Council. In the fourth quarter after Edison scored twice to stop the running clock, Ford scored on a 16-yard run to put the game out of reach for the Eagles. Junior running back Josh Moore added 76 yards rushing as the Mariners’ offensive line asserted its will on another opponent.

Hey New Jersey, People Lose Sleep When They Are “Home For The Holidays”

in Toms River News

So it seems like it’s counterproductive to be trying to celebrate the holidays but losing sleep over it? It’s interesting how as we approach Thanksgiving this week, people will actually lose sleep simply being at home for the holidays, so how is this so?

For me it’s back to a Thanksgiving tradition, going to bed early. This year we are so very happy to be back out with you on Black Friday for early shopping at the beautiful Ocean County Mall on Hooper Avenue in Toms River. We will be at “Center Court On Location” beginning at 6 am when the doors open, so please come down (PJ’s optional) and join us for some holiday fun.

OK I’m deviating from the topic, but my point is I have to be in bed early on Thanksgiving night to be ready for the 4 am wake-up call. Many however lose sleep on  Thanksgiving. According to a new survey by the Sleep Foundation“U.S. adults lose an average of 11 minutes and 14 seconds of sleep every Thanksgiving, according to a survey. Stress and anxiety were the most popular reason for losing sleep, according to respondents (34.7%).”

Bielat Santore & Company Sells Pisces Seafood Restaurant, Toms River, NJ

in Toms River News

TOMS RIVER, N.J., Nov. 16, 2022 /PRNewswire-PRWeb/ — Soon after purchasing Gregory’s Seafood in Manchester in April, local business owner and entrepreneur, Chris Garbooshian, tasked Bielat Santore & Company’s sales agent Robert Gillis to approach Pisces about the possible purchase of the restaurant. The timing turned out to be perfect as the owners, Bob and John Kurzynowski were contemplating retirement after operating the iconic Route 37 seafood restaurant and market since 1976! Gillis was able to negotiate terms agreeable to all parties, and the transaction closed on November 10th.

Although the name will change to the “Ocean Fresh Seafood Restaurant and Market,” Mr. Garbooshian’s plan is to continue the high standard set by the Kurzynowski’s of offering only the highest quality fresh and cooked fish and shellfish. He even plans to retain many of the current employees. The restaurant is strategically positioned at the base of the Tunney Bridge on Route 37 West leaving Seaside. Perfect for serving Toms River proper as well as the throngs of beach goers leaving the beach areas in the summer months.
