A new ‘frontier’ drives development of town that led N.J. in building permits issued last year

It didn’t matter that it was raining in Stafford Township. There were houses to build.

Despite the alternating drizzle and downpour on a recent Friday morning, workers used earth movers to spread gravel on sandy soil, stood on ladders nailing plywood panels onto 2-by-4 frames, and wrapped the freshly built walls with green plastic waterproofing sheets.

Whole blocks of houses at a time are being constructed in the township’s Manahawkin section, just off Exit 63 of the Garden State Parkway. They’re going up in a community known as Stafford Park under a multi-phase redevelopment plan adopted in 2006 for 345 single family houses, plus 310 apartments, on a 350-acre area site surrounding the capped Stafford Township Landfill.

Toms River East Little Leaguers To Be Honored At BlueClaws Game

JERSEY SHORE – After they earned their way to the Little League World Series, the Toms River East Little Leaguers will be recognized at the September 10 BlueClaws game.

The team of 12-year-olds were able to capture the hearts of the Jersey Shore on their magical run to Williamsport last month.

“We’re very excited to welcome out the Toms River East Little League team to the ballpark on our final homestand,” BlueClaws Team President Joe Ricciutti said. “We’re celebrating ‘Locals’ Summer’ at the ballpark this week and having a local team that made it big is a great addition!”

Communities rally to support Afghan refugees

When Tova Herskovitz of Toms River heard that Afghan evacuees were arriving at Joint Base McGuire-Dix-Lakehurst only a few miles from her house, she began to gather clothes, shoes and toys to donate.

Herskovitz, who is Jewish Orthodox, said she wanted to do something because some of her family members who survived the Holocaust were helped by others, and she wanted to pay it forward.

“It feels so close to home; I feel like it’s a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to help people who are in this dire situation, and they are so close,’’ she said. “To think about when I’m here swimming with my kids in the pool and buying them school supplies, and then you have kids a half hour away with nothing.”

COVID-19 Cases On The Rise In Ocean County

TOMS RIVER, NJ – Ocean County is experiencing a third wave that has killed 13 people in the past week and infected 1,211 people during that same period.

The Ocean County Health Department reported the highest single-day total of new Covid-19 Cases since April 9th. There were 261 cases recorded today. 24 new cases in Jackson, 51 in Toms River, 42 in Lakewood, and 41 in Brick. Ocean County also recorded 13 new deaths in the last week as well.

The OCHD does not break down its daily totals in its public reporting by age, nor does it report the severity of those cases and the number of asymptomatic patients who received positive test results. No data is available on false-positive test results.

JERSEY SHORE – The Monmouth County SCPA has more than 30 puppies in foster right now that are ready to leave their mothers and need just a couple of weeks in a home.

The SCPA provides everything you need. A short commitment is all they ask for. It’s OK if other pets or children are in the home. It would be ideal, but not required, if someone is home all the time.

“Between cruelty cases, surrenders, strays and our high-risk transport rescues – we are in need of foster homes for our babies,” they said.

SUEZ Urges Customers To Prepare For Tropical Storm Ida

TOMS RIVER – With Tropical Storm Ida approaching, SUEZ has announced their preparation plan to protect facilities and infrastructure which are vital to keeping customers well supplied during severe weather conditions.

The region is predicted to receive widespread rainfall, significant flooding, flash flooding and thunderstorms, the National Weather Service said.

“Our teams closely monitor the weather and will be prepared to make any adjustments necessary to maintain residents’ water quality and service, the integrity of our water and wastewater treatment plants, supply dams and precious water supplies,” Jim Mastrokalos, Director of Operations of SUEZ Operations in South Jersey said. “When the National Weather Service predicts a storm, our goal is to respond as quickly as possible to all emergency situations that may arise, rapidly restore any disrupted services and keep the water flowing.”

Scouts Achieve The Summit Award And More

TOMS RIVER – Scouts who are a part of the Venture Crew 129, chartered by the American Legion Post #129 in Toms River, have earned their Summit Award and much more throughout their adventurous year.

The Venture Crew was initially formed to give scouts a high adventure program and shifted its focus to meet the demand for more S.T.E.M. related programming that was in demand. An Explorer Club, started by advisor Melissa Townsend, was based in S.T.E.M. activities that mirrored some of the programming of the Venture Crew.

In 2018, the Crew participated in Venturefest at the Summit Bechtel Reserve where they were introduced to kayaking, canoeing, and stand-up paddle boards. This started a “Sea Scouts Ship” and based it on paddle craft. This interest shifted the Explorer Club’s program to a maritime focused S.T.E.M. program.

The Roman Catholic Churches of Toms River (RCCTR), a cohort of the four Catholic churches in Toms River, (St. Justin the Martyr Parish, St. Luke’s Parish, St. Joseph’s Parish and St. Maximilian Kolbe Parish), through the Diocese of Trenton built of volunteers within the community. are holding a series of events and workshops coming up to educate, spread awareness and ultimately help everyone find recovery.

Teacher shortages in NJ — COVID-19 likely playing a role in

Educator shortages leading up to the start of the academic year aren’t rare for New Jersey school districts, particularly the larger ones.

But the coronavirus pandemic may be making these teacher shortfalls even greater as the start of the 2021-2022 school year approaches.

“On the one end, we’re not refilling the pool of candidates, and on the other end, we have those people that are deciding, ‘I’ve had enough,'” said Todd Lawrence, owner of NJSchoolJobs.com. “Maybe COVID sped that process up for people.”
