TOMS RIVER — To Debbie Gallo, an English and special education at High School East, the importance of having children read books with diverse characters became clear when she saw the difference it made to her students.

“Many of my children struggle with reading comprehension skills,” Gallo told the Toms River Regional Board of Education at the board’s December meeting, urging them to approve the state’s new health and physical education curriculum. “As new books with diverse characters came into the curriculum, I got to see a spark, a light in those children’s eyes, that I rarely saw before.”
