Who are those faces on banners in Toms River? Learn why these veterans were honored

TOMS RIVER – George Howard Glawson Jr. was only 21 when he was killed in Tay Ninh Province in Vietnam in 1971. Charles Fairchild Godfrey was 24 when he was killed in Quang Tri Province in 1970. James W. Harvey II was just 23 when he was killed in Ghazni Province in Afghanistan in 2011.

Now those three servicemen have been honored, along with five other Toms River service members who died fighting for their country, on banners erected along Washington Street by town hall. It’s part of a new township program, “Hometown Heroes.”

Ocean County, NJ schools prepare for special way to honor our heroes for Veterans Day

It is one of the most important days of the year and also a reminder that this one day needs to be carried out on the other 364 days on the calendar — and that’s Veterans Day.

We need to continue to find ways to not just remember Veterans and honor their sacrifice and all that they’ve done and do to protect us, but to listen to them — their stories, but, also what their needs are, how we can help, what is needed to help them, and what can be done to help active military members as well.

It’s a great tradition in November each year that schools take time out to hold special ceremonies and events dedicated to Veterans in our area.

Work Continues on the New Fantastic Veterans Administration Center in Toms River, New Jersey

This is a fantastic addition to making a better quality of life for our area Veterans here in New Jersey and it’s conveniently located right here in Ocean County. Right in Toms River along Hooper Avenue.

Toms River Mayor Mo Hill (Pictured Above) was a big supporter of the VA Center coming to Toms River and campaigned hard to bring the project to Toms River. In an APP.Com article, Mayor Hill said “it’s literally the perfect location that presents our veterans with one-stop shopping.

Fantastic Groundbreaking For Future VA Clinic for Area Veterans in Toms River, New Jersey

I have many Veterans in my family, including my Dad and my Brother. My Dad served in the United States Navy during the Korean War and my Brother was a career member of the United States Army and was involved in Operation Desert Storm with multiple tours of the Middle East. There are also other members of the family in the Navy, Army, and Air Force. My Brother-In-Law was a career member of the Army and served in Viet Nam.

Blue Star Memorial Highways, Honoring America’s Veterans, Began in New Jersey

Drive west on Route 22 from Mountainside to North Plainfield, and you’ll pass through a patchwork of brushy woods, gas stations, chain stores, diners, tire shops and shopping malls. It wasn’t always this way.

In 1944, as World War II slogged along in Europe and the Pacific, the Garden Club of New Jersey dreamed up an initiative to beautify a 5.2-mile stretch of Route 22 in Union and Somerset counties and dedicate it to those serving in the armed forces. It would be dubbed Blue Star Drive.

Veterans Remembered In Wreath Laying Ceremonies

TOMS RIVER – Two local ceremonies recently commemorated the loss of those who served to protect America. They were among the 2,100 locations across the country to observe Wreaths Across America.

The organization’s mission is to “honor those who serve and their families, and teach future generations about the sacrifices made to preserve our freedoms.”
